Milan lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich on Marco Giampaolo’s debut, but the Coach saw ‘so many positives’.

Giampaolo fielded new signing Theo Hernandez at left-back and Paolo Maldini’s son Daniel as his No 10, while Fabio Borini started in central midfield and Samu Castillejo partnered Krzysztof Piatek up top.

However, Leon Goretzka’s goal on the stroke of half-time proved the difference between the two sides.

“Our performance gave me so many positives,” Giampaolo told Milan TV.

However, Leon Goretzka’s goal on the stroke of half-time proved the difference between the two sides.

“Our performance gave me so many positives,” Giampaolo told Milan TV.

“Bayern were ahead of us and had already played several games. We were playing our first and we got there with lots of good players out, but we still played well.

“We tried to propose the game we’d been working on in these 10 days at Milanello. We have a few things to fix and I have several ideas on how to fix them in the best way.

“The team have great quality, the players immediately understood what they were missing and they’re working well to make up for it. It takes time to assimilate a certain style of play.”

Hernandez went off during the break with an ankle injury, although serious damage was later ruled out, while youth graduate Mattia Gabbia played in central defence.

“I really liked Theo’s performance. He has great quality and great strength. It’s a shame he got hurt, but I liked his performance so much.

“The role of the central defender is complicated. I have very specific requests for those who play in his role.

“When I come across players who are as helpful and intelligent as mine, everything becomes easier.

“Gabbia played very attentively. Now it’s up to him to try and create more space.”

Next up for the Rossoneri in the International Champions Cup are Benfica on Sunday.
