The Mayor of Milan urges Inter and Milan to remain at San Siro, but both clubs announce they hope their new stadiums will be ready for 2028 outside the city limits.

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza is set to be left empty once the new arenas are constructed and it seems too late for Mayor Beppe Sala to turn the situation around.

He made another appeal today to both clubs to reconsider, but they are forging ahead with their own separate projects and seem to have a similar timeframe.

Inter have chosen a site in the area of Rozzano and CEO Alessandro Antonello confirms it will have circa 70,000 seats.

“The reference model in Europe is the Tottenham Stadium, or in America Los Angeles. The aim is to have it ready for the 2028-29 season, so in July 2028.”

Milan picked their own spot for the stadium in San Donato, which is again on the outskirts of the city of Milan.

When the Minister for Culture ruled that from 2025 the second tier at San Siro will be protected by laws covering historic architecture, Milan President Paolo Scaroni called that “the final blow” to any hopes of remaining.

“If we had been able to convince the local authorities to build a new stadium at San Siro, it would probably already be under construction now. We lost a lot of time, but in my view this turned into an opportunity, as San Donato can become just as iconic as San Siro.

“We want to make it the most beautiful stadium in the world, with 70,000 seats and eco-friendly, giving a sense of identity to Milan’s own arena. Our plans are to play the first game in July or August 2028.”
