Sinisa Mihajlovic continued his ugly row with Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini after Bologna’s defeat. ‘If he pointed that finger at me, he might not have got it back…’

The pair exchanged insults on the touchline during today’s match in Bergamo, which saw Mihajlovic booked and Gasperini sent off.

“If I have a problem with his bench, I’ll talk to him, and it should be vice-versa. I won’t stand for someone by-passing me and shouting at the members of my bench,” said Mihajlovic on Sky Sport Italia and in his press conference.

“That’s a lack of respect towards me and it’s not right. He mustn’t dare insult my bench, otherwise I get angry and that leads to trouble. Don’t point at my bench. If he pointed that finger at me, he might not have got it back…

“With games behind closed doors, you hear everything, but I don’t go to the opposition bench and tell them to shut up. I am responsible for my bench, so if Gasperini has something to say, he can say it to me.”

Bologna lost 1-0, but it was at least an improvement on the 5-1 defeat to Milan.

“It would’ve been impossible to do worse,” continued Mihajlovic. “It was a balanced game, we played well, the only difference is that we didn’t take our chances, whereas Atalanta did.

“We lacked what we always do, quality in the final ball. The performance was positive overall and it could’ve easily been a draw, but Luis Muriel was allowed too much space on the goal, it was an individual error.

“It took Atalanta four years under their coach to reach Europe, so we need another two or three. We can’t count this year, as I was out of action for five to six months, then there was the lockdown. Despite it all, we had a great season and are talking about Europe rather than safety, so that’s already a change of mentality.”
