Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic reveals he ‘expected’ Takehiro Tomiyasu to leave Bologna, although it was annoying to see him leave on the deadline day.

Tomiyasu completed a €23m move to Arsenal on the deadline day. He had been pushing for a move to the Premier League, where Tottenham had also made a formal bid to take him to North London.

Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic says he expected to see Tomiyasu leave but is disappointed by the timing of the deal.

“I was happy about Bologna’s transfer window, now a bit less,” the former defender said during the Premio Menarini.

“We had planned Tomiyasu’s exit, but it bugs me to see him leave five or six hours before the end of the summer transfer window.”

Tomiyasu joined Bologna from VV Sint-Truiden in a €7m deal in the summer of 2019. He played 64 goals with Bologna, scoring three goals, all in Serie A.

Arteta explains why Arsenal signed Tomiyasu from Bologna

He made his senior Japan debut in October 2018 and has 23 international caps to his name.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta explained his signing in an interview with the Gunners’ official website.

“We followed him for a while. We needed a full back who could be very versatile, can play as a centre back, can play in a back three, Tomi has this capacity,” the Spanish coach said.
