Fabrizio Miccoli reveals why he stood by Palermo and his first goal of the season was “a weight off my shoulders.”
The ‘Pocket Striker' was out of action for several months after knee surgery and suffered a relapse during his comeback, but broke through with a goal against Cesena on Sunday.
“The first people I thought of when the ball went in were my wife and children. In the summer, while they were on holiday with the rest of my family, I was in Rome to work on rehabilitation training,” he explained.

“The first people I thought of when the ball went in were my wife and children. In the summer, while they were on holiday with the rest of my family, I was in Rome to work on rehabilitation training,” he explained.
“I was so moved when all my teammates came to hug me after the goal. Everyone was waiting for it and I have to say it was wonderful, a real weight off my shoulders.”
Miccoli had been on the verge of leaving Sicily, but opted to stay and become a symbol of the club.
“If I stayed in Palermo, it was for these types of sensations: feeling important for the squad, for the Coach and the club. All this has always contributed to my love for this jersey.”
President Maurizio Zamparini has repeatedly announced he is putting the club up for sale in protest at refereeing decisions, but recently confirmed he would not leave the Board of Directors.
“Let's say the President never does anything without thinking it through and at the end of the day he's always right,” smiled Miccoli.
“I knew he would've come back. I believe a team always has what it deserves. It's true that something negative happened against Milan, but this weekend Cesena could easily have equalised, so I think we've got the points we deserve.”
