Napoli forward Dries Mertens hopes to stop Lazio striker Ciro Immobile from beating Gonzalo Higuain’s record of 36 goals in a Serie A season.

The Argentine forward, currently at Juventus, scored 36 times for Napoli in the 2015-16 Serie A season, but the Aquile ace Immobile, who has scored 35 this term, threatens to knock him off his throne.

Napoli host Lazio in the last match on Saturday and Mertens wants to avoid seeing a new record set at the San Paolo.

“Ciro has been doing well for many years, he’s a great player and I’m happy for him,” Mertens told Sky Sport Italia.

“We hope, however, that he won’t beat the record of Higuain on Saturday, because it would mean he scored against us.”
