Napoli midfielder Dries Mertens has expressed his sympathy for Roma’s Kevin Strootman, who is set to miss this summer’s World Cup.

The 26-year-old was on the field as the Dutchman suffered knee ligament damage during the match between the two sides last night.

“I knew as soon as it happened that there was a serious problem,” Mertens told VoetbalInternational.

“Marek Hamsik was a few metres away from him and he told me what happened.

“I am so sorry for him, I am close to him.

“When I got on the Coach afterwards I saw Kevin and he was very sad.

“He knows his body very well and he already knew that there was a real reason to worry.

“It’s a shame, playing in the World Cup has always been his dream.”
