Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret admits he had a ‘difficult summer’ and believes the upcoming Serie A clash with Milan at San Siro ‘will say a lot.’

The Italy international has been promoted to a starting role this season, but the Partenopei had been in talks with PSG’s Keylor Navas for several weeks in the summer, so his status in the team had been in doubt until the very last day of the summer transfer window.

“There has been a lot of notice, but I prefer facts,” Meret told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“There were rumours, but I’ve only thought about being focused as I’ve always done in the previous years. Work is the only way to reach important goals. I must improve in many aspects, but I think I’ll make it.”

Meret had been part of the Italy squad that won the Euros a year ago along with Salvatore Sirigu, who joined the Partenopei this summer.

“I know him well,” said Meret. “He knows how to behave and he knows how to handle difficult moments. I am happy we reunited after the Euros.”

Now that Napoli have confirmed him as the starting goalkeeper, negotiations over a contract extension have begun: “We are in talks, but for now, I am only focused on the pitch,” the goalkeeper said.

“On Sunday, we face Milan, an important but not decisive game as we are just at the beginning. It will say a lot, we always want to win and it would be important to go to the break with a good result. We dream of the Scudetto every year, we’ll try to achieve it this season.”

The Partenopei are the Serie A leaders along with Milan and Atalanta and visit the Rossoneri at San Siro on Sunday night in the last match before the international break.

Napoli have won two games from two in the Champions League, against Liverpool and Rangers.
