Inter legend Sandro Mazzola is confident Stefano Pioli is “the right man” and still hopes for a third-place finish.

Frank de Boer was sacked by the Nerazzurri last week, and they’re already nine points off the top three, which offers Champions League qualification.

However, on the occasion of his 74th birthday, Mazzola believes the new tactician is the right choice to take his former club forward.

“Inter are in good hands with Pioli,” said the man who played over 400 games for the Beneamata.

“He’s a very good Coach, and he’ll allow the team to get back to harbouring ambitions of – why not? – third place.

“Right now they’re behind, but there are a lot of games to go and to me Pioli seems like the right man.

“Then we have to review things more generally, because you have to avoid errors which can become obstacles over the course of a season.”
