Mazzola, who played over 400 games for the Beneamata, winning four Scudetti and two European Cups, has urged the club to tie Icardi down.

“Inter should not miss the opportunity to tie him [Icardi] to the Nerazzurri for a long time,” the 72-year-old told Tuttomercatoweb.

“We have enough negative attitudes without putting fuel on the fire and stoking the flames of controversy.

“They need to hold onto him tightly and think about the future.

“Icardi is an Inter player, even when not celebrating his goals.

“Without the right character, he wouldn’t have gotten this far. Sure, he can be melodramatic sometimes, but he’s shown he has the characteristics to be a champion.”
