Inter owner and President Erick Thohir has confirmed that Walter Mazzarri has asked him for a striker and he is likely to oblige.

The Nerazzurri are being linked with a handful of targets this January, most prominently Paris Saint-Germain’s Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Speaking to reporters this week, the club’s newly-arrived owner has indicated action will be forthcoming this midseason.

“Inter are entering a period of transition. After the ninth place of last year, we have hired a good Coach in Mazzarri. I think that with him this year, Inter will perform consistently,” Thohir has told Indonesian media this week.

“But when the intensity in play lowers, we notice the lack of alternatives in attack. Inter have only four forwards and two are currently injured.

“Palacio is playing practically all the time and we need more depth in attack, before we had to move Guarin.

“The Coach has asked me to purchase a striker and I have discussed this with [sporting director Marco] Branca.

“Today, decisions are made collectively, but we will not buy players based on their origin, nor on loan, but people who really serve this team and fall under the requirements of the Coach.

“The need is the main criterion, the funds are not an issue. It is impossible to collect so many players through purchasing them or sometimes perhaps on loan as they may not play if there are other players of superior quality.

“This year, we have only the League and the Cup, whilst if we had the Champions League then we would need a few extra players.

“Just as at DC United, Inter will be very disciplined in the use of its resources and my goal is to make the club healthy and to bring it back to European competition.”

Sky Italia are suggesting that Manchester City’s Stevan Jovetic is another possible target, in light of his early struggles for space in England.
