Walter Mazzarri admits it was “a surprise” when Napoli-Juventus was called off. “It’s a shame, as we were ready to make our fans happy.”

The match was meant to kick off at 19.45 UK time at the Stadio San Paolo, but the Mayor of Naples ruled it was too dangerous to have 60,000 people travelling to the arena during flash floods and freak thunderstorms.

GenoaInter was also cancelled after six people, including two children, died in floods in Liguria.

This morning a man was killed in Pozzuoli, near Naples, when a tree fell on to his car during storms.

“It’s a shame that we didn’t play this game, as the news arrived when we were eating lunch and took us all by surprise,” said Napoli Coach Mazzarri.

“We were ready to step on to the field with great concentration and were fired up to make our fans happy.

“However, we are aware that security issues have the absolute priority and at this moment our thoughts go out to those who lost their lives all over the country in the floods.”
