He was furious with the Turkish official, as he felt there was a foul on Hasan Yebda in the build-up to Giuseppe Rossi's winner.
“I must compliment my squad on the way they played in such a difficult arena. A comment on the referee? At the end of the game it is best not to talk about referees.
“However, when I talk about unlucky incidents, I am also referring to the officials. We did not deserve to go out, but maybe it was written in the stars.”
Mazzarri caused controversy with his starting XI, leaving Edinson Cavani, Paolo Cannavaro and Christian Maggio on the bench.
“Whoever saw the Catania game at the weekend knows Cavani had reached the end of his physical resources, so it was the right decision to put him on during the second half. Unfortunately, he too was unlucky and hit the upright.
“Villarreal got the 2-1 in the way that they did and then clammed up with everyone behind the ball, so it was difficult to find space.”
Now Napoli must focus on Serie A, where on Monday night they face leaders Milan.
“We will make them respect us, just as we did this evening. We haven't got this far by chance.”
