“After the defeat to Roma, I underlined to the players that we have to build on that second half and the superior possession statistics against a team that everyone knows can score from one or two chances,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“The attitude, mentality, organisation and team spirit we showed were all important, but unfortunately we missed out on the result. If in future we play the way we did in the second half against Roma, we won’t lose many matches.”

This is a return to San Siro for Mazzarri, who experienced the first dismissal of his career at Inter in November 2014.

“I played an infinite number of times at San Siro, both as opponent and host. Even if things went a certain way, and everyone knows why, it is always a pleasure to return there and say hello. I always had a good rapport with the Inter fans in the Curva.

“Sometimes in life we enter situations that are bigger than all of us, such as a club changing from one era to the next. Time was kind to my spell there and looking back I think many evaluated it differently to the way they did in the heat of the moment. I learned from the experience.

“Luciano Spalletti is a fine Coach and has a well-constructed team. We’ve got to play our game and cause them as many problems as possible.”

Daniele Baselli has joined the injury list with M’Baye Niang (who was hit in the eye by a football during training), Lyanco and Vittorio Parigini.

Cristian Ansaldi returns from suspension to face his old club, while Armando Izzo and Lorenzo De Silvestri have shaken off knocks.

“Perhaps Simone Zaza and Roberto Soriano don’t have 90 minutes in them yet, so with substitutions playing such a big part in modern football, I have to consider fitness levels carefully.

“Andrea Belotti is getting back to the tornado that I knew. He can score or not, depending on the team and incidents, but the performance is there.

“I tried Zaza both as a replacement for Belotti and as a support striker, as he can fulfil either role. It is important and only right to have competition for places, so whoever is in the best shape and has the right attitude in training will play.”

Torino squad for Inter: Ichazo, Rosati, Sirigu; Aina, Ansaldi, Bremer, De Silvestri, Djidji, Izzo, Moretti, N’Koulou; Berenguer, Lukic, Meite, Rincon, Soriano; Belotti, Edera, Falque, Ljajic, Zaza
