Walter Mazzarri believes Cagliari ‘deserved at least a draw’ from their 2-1 defeat to Atalanta and has faith they can turn their season around.

The Sardinians had managed to equalise through Joao Pedro after the Mario Pasalic opener, but were undone by Duvan Zapata.

They remain rock bottom and since taking over from Leonardo Semplici, Mazzarri has overseen one win, two draws and six defeats.

“Atalanta are in the Champions League, they are an international level squad who impress in Europe too,” Mazzarri told Sky Sport Italia.

“We put in a good performance and yet don’t pick up any points, which is now happening in three consecutive games. We caused Atalanta real problems and had several chances, deserving at least a draw, just like against Roma and Bologna.”

President Tommaso Giulini has nonetheless confirmed his faith in Mazzarri, despite the relative lack of improvement.

“He knows how things went when he came to look for me. It means he is consistent, he wanted me to come in at a time that in my view was not suitable.

“I think there is faith here, especially in the light of the injuries we are dealing with. Let’s work on the performance and then hope that someone up there looks down on us with a little kindness.

“The injuries have been piling up, I had to change tactics and vary to suit the characteristics of the players I had at my disposal.”
