“I am pleased the President appreciated my work,” said Mazzarri.
“I have always put myself up for the challenge and I feel that helps motivate everyone. We are in complete agreement on the project and in saying how this season ends will help us plan for the future.
“In fact, Thohir is the first to calm the situation after a bad result, whereas in Italy we tend to see a black hole after every setback. I get more upset than he does.”
The former Napoli tactician signed a two-year contract last summer, but that was under patron Massimo Moratti.
“I said that I wanted to concentrate on the field, so for an extension we’ll think only from May. My work as a Coach will end for the campaign on May 19 and then I can think about myself.
“No result will change my vision of work. With directors Marco Fassone and Piero Ausilio we evaluate what the Coach does, in difficult and simple moments, which includes helping youngsters to grow and getting the best out of the squad.
“In a transitional year, the results count for almost nothing. On Sunday we saw that football is made up of incidents that can defy logic,” he said referring to their 2-1 home defeat against Atalanta.
“We deserved to win and if we played it another 15 times we’d usually get the victory. Instead, we find ourselves commenting on a defeat.
“When planning for the future, you have to evaluate the performance more than the result. Anyone prepared to do that has clear ideas.
“Of course, with a few more of the points that we deserved, we’d be in more suitable positions right now. It says a lot about our growth that we haven’t picked up the results we had earned.
“We have improved in terms of mentality and as individuals too. This mentality of trying to win until the end can bring us to compete for everything next season, which is what a club of this stature deserves.”
Inter play Udinese on Thursday evening and face Antonio Di Natale.
“It is a dangerous game, just like the one with Atalanta. I hope to see the same performance as on Sunday, but with more luck in front of goal. I convinced the players we are on the right track, but mustn’t underestimate dangers.”
Juan Jesus should return to the starting XI, as his three-match ban has now expired.
“I will make my decisions tomorrow, based also on how the players are feeling.”
