“It’s a special match in Rome,” Mauri explained as he visited a local school alongside Alessandro Matri.

“It’s a game I’ve often experienced, it’s hard to explain. You have to live it to really understand, it’s a match that is anticipated from summer onward.

“You’re playing for an entire city, it’s a unique game.

“The best was the one on May 26 [a reference to Lazio winning the Coppa Italia against Roma in 2013, which earned a standing ovation from the children], it will remain unique in history.

“For me to lift the Coppa as captain was an indescribable feeling.”

Mauri has scored three times in the fixture, but sees his best goal as the overhead kick against Napoli in 2012.

“I’ve scored a lot, but the most beautiful one was against Napoli, even if the three in the Derby are the ones that come to mind most often.”

Finally, Mauri was asked about the best player he’s ever come up against.

“I’d have to say [Andrea] Pirlo,” the 36-year-old replied.

“I had to follow him when he had the ball, and it might not look like it but he runs a lot.

“Francesco Totti? A great player, and a symbol of Roma, but he’s still the captain of the other team. I definitely prefer other players!”
