Inter talisman Marco Materazzi was taken to hospital last night after coming off worse in a tackle with Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The 37-year-old centre-back had to be stretchered off after receiving an involuntary elbow in the face, as Ibrahimovic jumped kung-fu-like to get out of the way of Matrix's two-footed tackle.

La Gazzetta dello Sport understands that Materazzi later lost conscience for some seconds and an ambulance was called.

He then underwent a scan, which revealed no problems and was discharged, allowing him to return home.

Materazzi is expected to recover in time for Inter's match against Chievo, their Champions League clash with FC Twente and the Club World Cup.

Inter already have a grave injury crisis on their hands and Rafa Benitez hopes the squad will be reinforced in January.
