However, although Inter legend Materazzi believes the Biancocelesti are favourites, he is tipping Mauro Icardi to be decisive in tonight’s crucial clash.
“Lazio are the favourites as they are playing at home and have two good results from three,” the 44-year-old told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“But Inter are stronger as a team and being obliged to win is an advantage for them. Managing the game isn’t their strong point.
“They can’t start by going for it. I see the first 20 minutes being tight, it’s vital not to concede a goal.”
Materazzi, currently coaching in the Indian Super League, was asked who he thought would make the difference at the Stadio Olimpico.
“I’ll be boring and say Icardi. He was criticised unfairly against Sassuolo when Consigli was incredible.
“He will play a great match in Rome, he wants the Champions League more than anyone.”
The ex-defender is optimistic about the Nerazzurri’s future but concedes it will have been a poor season for Inter if they fail this evening.
“With four available places, Inter need to get into the Champions League.
“Otherwise it’s been a negative season, albeit one in which important foundations have been laid for the future.”
