Beira Mar confirm that director general Francesco Marroccu has left them, after a request from Cagliari’s new owner Tommaso Giulini.

Giulini yesterday officially completed his takeover of the Sardinian club and, alongside the expectation of announcing Zdenek Zeman as Coach, has been expected to also bring in a new sporting director.

That man was listed most recently as Marroccu, who served in the position with the club up until last summer, before then joining Beira Mar in January.

However, with Nicola Salerno expected to leave the role to follow Massimo Cellino to Leeds United, the Portuguese club have confirmed Marroccu’s departure, opening up for a second stint with the Isolani.

“After receiving a formal invitation from the new owner of Cagliari, we have dissolved the relationship with our director general Francesco Marroccu, correct and professional as always, for him to return to his former club and to be closer to his family,” reads Beira Mar’s statement released today.

“The board of directors of Beira Mar has agreed to the request and wishes Francesco Marroccu good luck in his new challenge.

“He expressed words of thanks and wished us success in the near future.”
