Former Roma defender Marquinhos has urged Marco Verratti to stay at Paris Saint-Germain as the club’s project “is still in check.”

Verratti has been heavily linked with Barcelona in recent weeks, amidst reports he has already agreed to join the Blaugrana and will go on strike during preseason, but Marquinho insists the midfielder “never said he wanted to leave PSG.”

“I’ve read a lot about it, but I don’t know what the truth is. Marco never said he wanted to leave PSG,” the Brazilian told L’Equipe.

“He’s a great player and very important for our project, so I advise Marco to stay with us.

“I don’t want to see him go and, frankly, I don’t think he will. A project of this magnitude can’t resemble a long, straight line.

“People thought it’d be easy for us to win everything, but that’s football. We can’t predetermine anything.

“This very high level of football is complicated and I’m not surprised that the club are having a difficult time, but it doesn’t scare me.

“You have to stay on track. We have a very strong and intelligent team, who are learning from the mistakes of the past and will reach their objectives.

“Many have said that the PSG project has been lost, but I don’t agree. The basic premise of the project is still in check.

“We know where we want to go and how to get there.”
