This is the first pre-season for Marotta at Inter, having taken over a few months ago, and he ushered in Coach Antonio Conte.

“I am very proud to be part of this project involving Suning as a winning model, the Zhang family and above all the history of Inter,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

“Let’s say this season represents a new beginning. The club is working to create a precise identity. We have left the FFP settlement agreement with UEFA and now a new era begins where we can raise the bar.

“We first thought of Conte because we wanted to bring in a profile that helped the club to grow. We are very proud of this choice.”

Conte said in his first interview that he wanted to tone down the ‘Pazza Inter’ (Crazy Inter) nickname and steady the ship.

“The objective is to find stability,” agreed Marotta. “Conte remains a great motivator for team and club. He really does focus on the details and it’s what allows us to achieve important results. We can all grow with him by our side.

“I firmly believe that whoever spends the most money doesn’t necessarily win. It is the job of management to set targets, which for us is to regularly participate in the Champions League, raise the bar in Serie A and try to win the Coppa Italia.

“You achieve this by building a strong team while respecting financial parameters. In sport, you must never set yourself limits, but always just try to give your best. If you don’t create a culture of alibis, then you can find the right path to achieve extraordinary results.”

Marotta and Conte both started the Juventus revival that led to eight consecutive Serie A titles, so seeing them together at Inter is difficult for some fans to swallow.

“Juve represent the past for me and so I look to the present, which is Inter. Rivalry is the essence of football, but I will try to take Inter as far as possible.

“Everyone has within their DNA the desire for new challenges. Now I want to win with Inter, just as in the past I wanted to win with Varese.”
