“There are no regrets. It’s in the past now and we are accustomed to taking destiny into our own hands,” the director general told Mediaset Premium.

“We are used to situations of uncertainty and we simply have only one chance tonight – to win.

“Dybala hasn’t scored in the Champions League yet this season, but statistics are irrelevant, because what matters is we have rediscovered an important player for our squad after his injury.

“On Saturday against Lazio, he scored a wonderful goal, worthy of a champion and I am sure he’ll repeat that this evening, if not with the same gesture, then with a positive performance.

“We must try to score a goal, that is obvious, and we know that Tottenham are good in possession. Perhaps we went a bit too deep in the first leg, but as we were 2-0 up, perhaps we thought that we could just control the situation.”

Marotta was asked if 40-year-old captain Gigi Buffon will play on for another year or hang up his boots.

“Buffon said things that were right and it’s good to respect those. You are able to make your own conclusions, but I think it would be unfair to comment.”
