In a sudden turnaround, Marcelino has become the hot favourite for the Inter job after he was filmed emerging from a club meeting.

The Nerazzurri fired Frank de Boer on Monday night, but are yet to find his replacement, so Primavera youth team Coach Stefano Vecchi is on the bench temporarily.

Stefano Pioli had been the main contender from the get-go, but Chinese owners Suning Group were not convinced he had sufficient status.

Representatives of Suning flew in on Friday and held meetings with both Pioli and Marcelino.

In a sudden turnaround, Marcelino has become the hot favourite for the Inter job after he was filmed emerging from a club meeting.

Stefano Pioli had been the main contender from the get-go, but Chinese owners Suning Group were not convinced he had sufficient status.

Representatives of Suning flew in on Friday and held meetings with both Pioli and Marcelino.

The former Villarreal boss was filmed coming back to his hotel in Milan following a meeting late Friday evening.

He did not answer questions, but did smile at the media and say: “See you soon.”

Reports in Spanish paper Marca claim Marcelino’s negotiations are progressing well and coming down to the details.

In this agreement, his assistant manager would be an Italian to help communicate with the squad.

Mediaset Premium and Sky Sport Italia also now suggest that Marcelino has moved to the top of the wish-list.

There is a definite split within the club, as Inter’s Italian directors Piero Ausilio and Giovanni Gardini are pushing for ex-Lazio Coach Pioli, whereas Suning want Marcelino or Guus Hiddink.

President Erick Thohir and CEO Michael Bolingbroke had publicly backed De Boer just four days before his dismissal.

According to Mediaset Premium, Ausilio and Gardini were cut out of the meetings with Pioli and Marcelino today.

It’s believed Marcelino will remain in Milan for at least another 48 hours and that Inter will appoint their new tactician on Sunday evening.
