The Sardinians had been 2-1 up through a pair of Leonardo Pavoletti headers, but after seven minutes of stoppages due to Artur Ionita being stretchered off with a head injury, Sassuolo were awarded a spot-kick for handball.

“There are so many regrets, as there was too much injury time, the free kick that prompted the penalty incident was taken 20 metres further forward than it should’ve been and we had the game in hand,” Maran told Sky Sport Italia.

“It would’ve been a deserved victory and we kept Sassuolo quiet, even at the end.”

The tension spilled over after the final whistle as players clashed on the field and then in the tunnel.
