Rolando Maran admits Cagliari “want to be protagonists” this season in Serie A and the Coppa Italia after strengthening the squad.

The Sardinians sold Nicolò Barella to Inter, but brought in the likes of Radja Nainggolan, Nahitan Nandez, Marko Pjaca and will have Luca Pellegrini back on loan, this time from Juventus.

“A team’s objectives are decided by the mentality on the field,” said the Coach in a Press conference.

“We must ensure the side knows what it wants. We mustn’t limit ourselves to just playing games, but instead really embody them as if they were all Cup Finals. That’s the only way to grow and it’s a joy for me to work with such a competitive squad.

“The President invested heavily to put this side at my disposal. We wanted motivated players and we got them. It’s only the beginning of the construction process, but the quality is remarkable.”

Cagliari play their first official match of the season on Sunday, the Coppa Italia Third Round against Maran’s old club Chievo.

“A new campaign begins, we want to be ready to experience it as protagonists. The added difficulties in our first game will be that Chievo just got relegated to Serie B and want to prove a point, with many players I know very well.

“We’re not at 100 per cent fitness yet, but these players allow me to chop and change, moving players to where they can be most useful.”
