The shirt worn by Diego Maradona when he scored the infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal in a 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England has sold at auction for an eye-watering sum.
The Napoli legend scored the infamous goal in a 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England, a defining moment of his career. In the same game, he scored what has since been called the ‘goal of the century’ after an incredible 60-yard dribble.
As reported by Sky Sports, Maradona’s Hand of God shirt has sold for £7,142,500 at auction to a currently unknown buyer, becoming the most expensive football shirt ever sold. This title was previously held by a Pele shirt worn in the 1970 World Cup final, which sold for £157,750 in March 2002.
Some controversy has erupted as a result of former England international Steve Hodge’s decision to put the shirt up for sale, with Argentine Football Association officials desperate to take the shirt to a Maradona museum in Buenos Aires. Hodge played in that World Cup quarter-final and swapped shirts with the Napoli legend after the game.
