Former Italy Under-21 Coach Devis Mangia believes Roma’s Mattia Destro “can become the best striker in Italy.”

The forward has struggled for form amid injury since moving from Siena to the Giallorossi last summer and also failed to make his mark in the European Under-21 Championship.

“I can say the only regret I have about that tournament is that some of the players did not arrive in their best form, through no fault of their own,” Mangia told Sky Sport Italia.

The Azzurrini finished second, losing the Final 4-2 to Spain, and Mangia opted not to renew his contract. He has been replaced by ex-Under-20 Coach Gigi Di Biagio.

“Destro had knee problems and I am convinced he has very important qualities. I consider him to be one of the strongest young Italians and can become the best striker in Italy.”
