Roberto Mancini declares Italy have to be “one of the candidates to win” at the European Championships in 2020.

The Azzurri CT held a Press conference at Coverciano this afternoon for the ‘Il calcio e chi lo racconta’ seminar, and as he left he offered some extra words to the waiting journalists.

“We have to be ready for the Euros,” Mancini said.

“We need to qualify for the Euros and be one of the candidates to win. That’s our objective.

“Fortunately the players I’ve found in the national team are all technically very good. [Lorenzo] Insigne is an example, and that’s an advantage.

“I have players who get along well because they all speak the same language, and he’s definitely one of those with great quality.”

While Italy have improved under Mancini’s tenure, there doesn’t appear to be a standout striker.

“[Mario] Balotelli is a separate topic, because that doesn’t depend on anyone else but him.

“As for the others, there are players who score goals in the league and have been unlucky in the national team.

“Against Portugal, for example, [Ciro] Immobile was unlucky because he had two or three chances and could have scored.

“The important thing is to get into those positions, and if you shoot at goal 13 or 14 times, eventually it’ll go in.”
