Roberto Mancini is “very optimistic” about the future of the Italy team, and confirms he won’t hold training camps as his predecessors did.

The Azzurri CT took over last month after Giampiero Ventura’s failure to reach the World Cup, but hasn’t taken charge of a competitive game yet.

“I’m very optimistic,” Mancini told Il Secolo XIX.

“The lads I’m training are very young and you need enthusiasm to be strong, without that you can’t be optimistic.

“The lads I’m training are very young and you need enthusiasm to be strong, without that you can’t be optimistic.

“They’re good, but they’re maybe lacking a bit of experience, some of them haven’t played at international level. That’ll come though.

“There are only two or three real superstars in the world, four at most. But there are teams with good players, and they manage to win with them.

“We can’t know how the likes of [Lorenzo] Insigne, [Alessio] Romagnoli, [Federico] Chiesa and [Mattia] Caldara will grow.

“Then maybe someone who we don’t know about yet will explode. It’s happened to others, just look at France for example.

“Until recently we didn’t know anything about [Kylian] Mbappé or [Ousmane] Dembélé.

“The problem for a CT has always been to meet the needs of the clubs. I won’t do training camps, I’ll adapt to the needs of various clubs.

“I want the players to come to the national team relaxed and rested.”
