There was a scare at Napoli’s Castel Volturno training ground today when a man drove his car through the gates and stopped close to the pitch.

According to Sky Sport Italia and Gazzetta dello Sport, the players were in the locker room at the time, which may well have saved them from a very dangerous situation.

They had only just arrived for the afternoon training session and were getting ready in the dressing rooms.

The man knocked down the gates with his car and continued to travel between the three training pitches, eventually leaving the vehicle next to a golf course.

The person was spotted fleeing on foot and appeared to be in a confused state.

Police arrived circa 30 minutes later and are still looking for the individual.

Initial reports suggest the authorities believe it was an accident or caused by someone who was under the effects of drugs or alcohol.
