Malta Coach Pietro Ghedin is happy to see his old player Antonio Conte again ahead of Italy’s Euro 2016 qualifier.

The match will kick off at the Ta’Qali National Stadium tomorrow at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Ghedin is no stranger to the Azzurri, as he is Italian and was for many years part of the coaching staff under Cesare Maldini, Dino Zoff and Giovanni Trapattoni.

That means he was in charge of training when current Italy Coach Conte was still a player.

“Antonio put character, seriousness, application and hunger into everything,” Ghedin told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He was a lovely lad, always ready to work hard. It wasn’t easy to find space in that team, but Antonio worked his way into it.

“He was good in different midfield roles and I think that helped him to become a Coach, as from midfield you can see and understand the game better.

“Conte deserved to be appointed Italy Coach, as he’s not there by fluke. I’ll gladly hug him when we meet up.”

Malta have lost both their Euro 2016 qualifiers so far, including a 3-0 home defeat to Norway on Friday.

“It looks like an impossible match for us. Conte sent his brother to scout us in action and we are 155th in the FIFA rankings, but you never know. There aren’t the same easily beatable teams as in the past.”
