Paolo Maldini says Milan will do everything they can to extend Gigio Donnarumma’s contract and reveals the Rossoneri have a budget to sign new players in January.

"If we win this game we are not going to runaway but it would be the confirmation of a good moment,” Maldini told Sky Sport before Milan-Roma.

“We need balance, we know hard times will come, media and fans can’t give us this balance, we need to find it ourselves. We are ambitious and young players are important also because sometimes they are reckless.

“This team always has always failed in the decisive moment, also with Rino [Gattuso] on the bench we lost our certainties in important moments of the season.

“I think that thanks to the coach’s job we removed this idea that we are not ready to compete, I think that it was crucial for our growth.”

The Rossoneri will be without Gigio Donnarumma and Jens Petter Hauge who have tested positive for Covid-19.

“We’ll get to a point when we’ll have herd immunity, we were told that with some antibodies we wouldn’t catch the virus anymore.

“As we said it after the lockdown we must end the season following the protocols and if needed let other players go onto the pitch.”

Donnarumma remains a huge talking point at the club as his contract expires at the end of the season.

“Stability allowed us to begin the season as we did. It’s wrong not to consider Gigio Donnarumma a cornerstone of this team, he is only 21 but he is one of our leaders and we will do everything we can to make him stay.”

Donnarumma’s contract extension, however, is not the only priority of the club for the coming months.

“If we’ll have a chance to strengthen the team in January we’ll do it. We know we are a competitive team but if there will be an opportunity to sign a player that can allow us to make a step forward we’ll try to sign him also because we didn’t spend what we could in the previous transfer window.”
