“I should've been called up two years ago. I didn't expect to be left out,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I feel the Azzurri jersey as very important to me and I come here to play. The atmosphere is great and I get to meet up with old friends like Marco D'Alessandro, Marco Faraoni, Riccardo Brosco and Alessandro Crescenzi.”

Macheda's confidence is up after scoring a Premier League goal against Aston Villa.

“It was a nice sensation, as I was the only striker there who hadn't scored yet. I feel Sir Alex Ferguson has faith in me and he gives me a lot of advice.

“I want to stay in Manchester, as I feel at home there.”
