Massimo Maccarone concedes Sampdoria are battling against relegation. “We'll gamble with our safety in the next five rounds.”

The Blucerchiati shocked many to finish fourth last season, but are out of the Champions League, Europa League and Coppa Italia as well as sliding down to six points clear of the bottom three.

“Undoubtedly we are struggling, but I think our difficulties come from an unlucky campaign and we can finish it off without too many worries,” he told Corriere Mercantile newspaper.

“Undoubtedly we are struggling, but I think our difficulties come from an unlucky campaign and we can finish it off without too many worries,” he told Corriere Mercantile newspaper.

“Football is made up of incidents. Against Bologna we scored three goals in a heartbeat, while in other games the ball would never cross the line.

“We cannot doubt there are problems, but we mustn't get downhearted. In situations like this, it is key to rediscover your self-belief. I have always scored goals in my career and I'm confident I'll contribute at Sampdoria too.”

However, the team is in danger of being sucked back into the relegation dogfight.

“Recent results, both ours and those of other teams, have put us in a situation where we need a victory and nothing else will do.

“Now we have a cycle of five matches that we have to make the most of to put all fears behind us. We'll gamble with our safety in the next five rounds.”

Samp will face relegation battlers Cesena, Catania, Parma, Chievo and Lecce.
