Romelu Lukaku has publicly urged Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel for ‘a bit of clarity’ about his role and outlined how the experience at Inter with Antonio Conte ‘added qualities to my game.’
The Belgium international scored over 30 competitive goals per season in his two years at Inter under Conte, turning into one of the best centre-forwards in the world.
This silenced many critics from his Manchester United and Everton days, earning a €115m transfer to Chelsea over the summer.
However, even taking a sprained ankle into account, Lukaku has scored only six goals with two assists in 17 competitive games for the Blues.
It’s a far cry from the performances in the Inter jersey, leading some to suggest only Conte can get the best out of him.
When Lukaku spoke to ESPN Brasil about the situation, the striker also admitted there was tension behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge and he’d outlined some of the ways Inter and Conte had improved him over the last two years.
“Me and the coach, we had a couple of conversations about whatever he wanted from me,” he told ESPN Brasil.
“Obviously I told him I’m multidimensional. It’s just about having a bit of clarity about how he wants to use me. And then whatever he wants from me, I can do whatever aspects he wants for the game.
“I can run in behind, I can press, I can hold the ball up. So I think throughout the years these are qualities I added to my game.
“So I just wanted an opportunity, I got it today, I’m happy that I helped the team, now I just want to move forward.”
