The former Milan midfielder moved on loan to Sassuolo in August 2018 and joined the Neroverdi on a permanent deal one year later.

So far, the 22-year-old has impressed enough to secure a place in Roberto Mancini’s Italy squad, but admits he has ‘ambitions’ at club level too.

“I dream of returning to a great team,” he told Cronache di Spogliatoio. “I have ambitions and I would like to play in the Champions League.

“I know everything passes from this year at Sassuolo. I’d like to go back to a big one, hear the Champions League anthem and maybe go back to playing with the fans in the stadium.

“It would be a great dream, but the present is the most important thing.”

And the present is an away match against Napoli at the San Paolo, but the Neroverdi sit third in Serie A after five games unbeaten in the League.

“Our play is a belief that the coach has injected in our blood and it totally fits my characteristics,” Locatelli said. “There’s maximum availability on the part of everyone.

“We know what the results can be. It’s all purposeful, it’s not just a possession to have fun. We all believe this, we all know our way of playing and everyone is available.”
