The Catania sporting director, who has spent the last few seasons overseeing Sicilian side Catania’s transfer strategy under President Antonino Pulvirenti, sparked rumours of an imminent departure from the club late last week.
The Gazzetta dello Sport allege today that Lo Monaco’s decision a few days ago to resign as managing director of Segea – a sports company linked to the running of Catania’s training facilities – is the latest evidence of his intention to leave the club this summer.
Links have subsequently returned pushing Lo Monaco towards hometown club Napoli, alongside the Rossazzurri’s Coach Vincenzo Montella and in-form defender Nicolas Spolli, and the sporting director is less-than-convincing in trying to clarify the situation this afternoon.
“I’m going to Napoli with Montella and Spolli? These days there is a lot of chatter created,” suggested the fiery sporting director to Radio Crc.
“Currently I am caught at the end of a year that has provided great satisfaction. I am a staunch southerner, a Neapolitan and certified interest from Napoli is of course very pleasing.
“But, what will be will be. If [Napoli President Aurelio] De Laurentiis called me? Of course, I have often spoken with Aurelio on questions regarding the League, but nothing else.
“In relation to my issue at Catania, when the times comes it will be discussed.”
Lo Monaco was pressed again on links with the Vesuviani and whether he would bring Montella and Spolli with him.
“Montella? He is a young Coach who has the DNA of a great Coach. He is destined to work for a great team. Would he be one of three of us to move to Napoli? Anything can happen.
“I know how Napoli operate. The only sure thing to consider in the market is that Napoli are at the top and have to think about competing again with Juventus and Milan.
“Whoever takes over and whoever remains should realise that Napoli has to aspire to be at the highest positions, first.”
