The cause of death for Piermario Morosini has yet to be discovered, after an autopsy revealed ‘no clear signs’.

The 25-year-old midfielder collapsed during the first half of his team Livorno’s game at Pescara on Saturday afternoon, before failing to regain consciousness and then being pronounced dead at hospital within half an hour.

Initial reports suggested that the Bergamo-born player had died after suffering cardiac arrest, but a later theory emerged that a clash of heads with an opponent on the pitch had caused an aneurysm.

An autopsy was ordered to provide a definitive explanation, but after completing it in a six-hour examination on Monday, coroner Cristian D’Ovidio revealed an inconclusive first reaction.

“There are no clear signs that allow us to determine what caused the young man’s death,” he told reporters. “Now, we require further attention, even considering toxicology.”
