In total there were nine arrests last night, but two locals were held for cocaine possession and being drunk and disorderly, whereas the five Italians were detained for violence or possession of a weapon.

Roma have already issued a statement condemning the “abhorrent behaviour of a small minority of travelling fans who brought shame on the club and the vast majority of Roma’s well-behaved supporters at Anfield.”

The incident now raises very serious questions on how the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico will be policed next Wednesday.
