The January transfer window has evidently made a big difference, as the Salentini have now notched up three consecutive Serie A victories.

“At times people are a little hasty, but this is a team that 18 months ago was in Serie C. We faced the top flight with our limitations, it took a while to settle, to understand we could play on level terms and even win,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“I think the victory over Torino gave us a massive psychological boost, as it was our first home win of the season and we did it 4-0.

“My biggest regret is that we didn’t have enough strength in depth during December to train well, let alone play at the right level. That is a real pity.

“In Serie A, you need three, four players to get into the opposition box and we’re working on that kind of pro-active attitude, believing in the quality of teammates and trusting if we make the run, we’ll be rewarded.

“I can prepare a game all week, but there are some details I cannot prepare for, such as the weather. Today in the first half, SPAL had the wind against them and we didn’t even try to take advantage of the fact it was more difficult for them to clear the ball. These are details you have to read and interpret during the match.

“I was convinced Lecce would secure safety, as I knew the quality of this squad and had faith we’d bring in reinforcements in January. I would’ve liked these players in June, but I realise this is a precious gem of a club, as it is run virtuously with no debts and we have to keep it that way.”

Lecce had not celebrated three consecutive Serie A victories since Delio Rossi’s side in 2004.

“We worked well together at Lazio and Palermo, he taught me so much in my first step up to a big club. I am glad for these lads, who have equalled that record, as for a newly-promoted club in today’s competitive football, it is very, very difficult to get three wins in a row.”
