Marcello Lippi has warned Italy’s rivals that they “only go to European Championships and World Cups to win.”

Italy qualified for Euro 2020 with a 100 percent record, winning all 10 of their qualifiers, and Lippi backed the Azzurri to “make a good impression” at the tournament.

“We’ll make a good impression,” the former Juventus boss told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Italy only go to European Championships and World Cups to win, like Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands and England.

“[Playing in] Rome will make the nights extra magical. I liked this Italy right away because they’ve brought results, put on shows and given us hope.

“The project was to rebuild and recover the beautiful image of our football in line with tradition: we achieved our objective excellently.

“But now there’s more to be done, there’s the ingenious message Mancini sent to clubs: the young players are there, and they’re good ones. You just have to select them and let them play.

“He did it before some set foot in the League.”

The 71-year-old knows the Nazionale’s mentality only too well, having led them to World Cup glory in 2006.

“Mancini thinks like me. He has the same impatience in understanding the value of the team.

“I wanted the World Cup: it wasn’t enough for me to be better than Moldova, I had to go toe-to-toe with the big sides.

“I asked for friendlies with Germany, Netherlands and Brazil which, however, was too expensive.”
