Former Juventus Coach Marcello Lippi has warned his old side not to underestimate Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

The legendary tactician has more reason than most to be wary of the Germans, his Bianconeri side losing the Champions League final to this opposition in 2007.

“BVB [Borussia Dortmund] will demonstrate their undoubted quality, particularly in Europe,” Lippi warned in an interview with Kicker.

“It was clear that the excellent work of [Jurgen] Klopp and the quality of the team would shine through eventually.

“It was clear that the excellent work of [Jurgen] Klopp and the quality of the team would shine through eventually.

“Juventus cannot afford to subconsciously underestimate Dortmund because of their position in the League.

“However, I do think my ex-team is the favourite. It doesn’t matter that it’s a rematch of 1997, because my memories of Dortmund are mostly positive.

“We won there with Juve in the UEFA Cup in 1995, 2-1, and then repeated the feat in the Westfalenstadion the next year, winning 3-1 and then winning the final.

“Of course, I haven’t forgotten the final in Bayern Munich’s Olympiastadion the year after, a night when everything went wrong.

“Juve were stronger on paper, but we all know what happened. A really unpleasant memory.

“In Dortmund there was also the semi-final [of the World Cup] in 2006 against Germany [where Italy won 2-0].

“That success brought us to Berlin [for the final], and the greatest day of my coaching career [winning the World Cup].”
