Andrea Conti returns to the Milan starting XI after 18 months with Samu Castillejo replacing Suso against Empoli this evening.

The Rossoneri are on a roll at the moment and closed the gap from third-placed Inter to just four points thanks to a commanding 3-1 victory away to Atalanta.

This fixture is being played on a Friday so they can prepare for the Coppa Italia semi-final against Lazio on Tuesday evening at the Stadio Olimpico.

Suso is suspended, with Mattia Caldara, Jack Bonaventura, Cristian Zapata and Pepe Reina still injured, though Lucas Biglia and Ivan Strinic are back in the squad.

The big news is the return of Conti to the starting XI, something he has not experienced for 544 days, since suffering a serious knee injury in August 2017.

Castillejo is chosen to replace Suso in the trident attack with Hakan Calhanoglu and Krzysztof Piatek.

Curiously, Piatek scored his debut Serie A goal for Genoa against Empoli on August 26 and is facing a fellow Pole in goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski.

Since joining from Genoa, Piatek has scored on average a goal every 53 minutes of football, finding the net six times in his first four competitive starts for Milan. The 23-year-old has a total of 25 goals for both clubs in all competition this season.

Lucas Paqueta also starts his ninth game in a row since joining from Flamengo in January.

Empoli are fresh from a 3-0 victory over Sassuolo, which allowed them to open up a three-point lead over the relegation zone, but it was their first win in eight rounds.

They are missing injured Luca Antonelli, who therefore cannot face his former club, but veteran Manuel Pasqual takes the left wing-back role.

Ex-Cagliari striker Diego Farias is chosen to partner Francesco ‘Ciccio’ Caputo in attack.

These teams have shared the spoils in four of their last seven Serie A meetings, with two Rossoneri wins and one for Empoli.
