Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Lecce are only a step away from signing defender Samuel Umtiti on loan from Barcelona.

Lecce sporting director Pantaleo Corvino is in constant contact with the Blaugrana as he works to secure the arrival of the 28-year-old French centre back on loan. Umtiti has previously been linked with a move to Serie A in the past but now he’s finally expected to make the jump over to Italy, although likely at a location nobody expected.

Di Marzio details how Lecce are working hard to close out the deal for Umtiti and things could be fully finalised for the Barcelona man in the coming days.

The French defender’s career has been majorly derailed by injuries following his successful World Cup campaign in 2018.  Umtiti was suffering from a knee injury heading into the tournament but elected not to undergo an operation, allowing him to take part at the tournament in Russia.

In September 2018, barely two months after France lifted the World Cup, Umtiti’s injury troubles truly began; he missed 28 games of the 2018-19 campaign, 10 matches of the 19-20 season, 25 games in the 20-21 campaign and over 22 games last season. He will be hoping to re-find his form with Lecce in the coming year.
