Despite Milan‘s desire to extend Rafael Leao’s contract before the World Cup, it appears unlikely that the Portugal international will pen a new deal before the beginning of Qatar 2022.

La Gazzetta Dello Sport delivers the latest updates regarding Leao’s contract saga, suggesting that Milan will likely miss the first deadline in negotiations.

Club director Paolo Maldini said last month that Milan hoped to extend with their star striker before the beginning of the World Cup on November 2022, but the Rossoneri are not expected to fulfil their task by that time.

According to the report, there is still no economic agreement between the two parties, with Milan open to offering €6.5m plus add-ons, a huge pay rise from the current €1.4m wages.

The Rossoneri fear that if Leao shines at the World Cup, his economic requests will become unaffordable for the club, forcing them to sell at the end of the season.

Leao also expects Milan and Lille to cover the €19m he owes to Sporting CP, a sum that he was ordered to pay after terminating his contract unilaterally in 2018.

The Serie A giants are determined to keep hold of Leao in January despite potential big-money offers coming from the Premier League but are aware that without a contract extension, they’ll have to sell in the summer.

Chelsea and Manchester City are strongly interested in Leao. The Blues were ready to offer €120m this past August, but Milan refused to sell for less than €150m, Leao’s release clause.

  1. Yeaaaa, I too don’t think he renews. in which case, Milan would be smart to wait until after the WC to get more calls for him and absolutely cash out on him. No need to try to break the bank trying to renew him, as it would also set the precedent, especially with Bennacer renewal coming up. Let it go……Let it goooooooo….

  2. £120m if spent on players, milan can become even better, you may have to sell mike maignan soon – no doubt, manchester united / tottenham will be after him

  3. @vik, reality is that the epl is more attractive prosposition than serie a – they can offer more money than you lot, — better life to live in london, spurs have the best stadium in the world – and conte is making the owner invest more in players.

Remember the have one of the best strikers in todays game, kane – theyve able to keep him
