The racist chants from Lazio fans addressed to Lecce players Samuel Umtiti and Lameck Banda will cost the Biancocelesti the closure of the Stadio Olimpico’s Curva Nord for one match, Serie A’s sporting judge ruled on Thursday.

Umtiti was reduced to tears during his side’s 2-1 comeback victory over Lazio after hearing racist abuse coming from the away end targeting him and his teammate Banda.

The match was temporarily stopped by the referee in the second half, with the stadium announcer warning that further abuse would result in a permanent game suspension.

According to the sporting judge’s verdict, the racist taunts came from ‘almost all’ of the fans occupying the visitor section, leading to the decision to close the Curva Nord terrace at the Stadio Olimpico for one game, which will see Lazio take on Empoli in Rome.

The Biancocelesti published an official statement claiming they will use ‘all the tools available against every form of racism and discrimination’, but insisting their fans ‘are not racist’.

10 thought on “Lazio’s Curva Nord shut down following fans’ racist abuse at Lecce”
  1. defending their fans as not racist after rasist chant coming for curva nord is show how lazio not serious tackle this disgusting behaviour

  2. Plus a big applause for Serie A to close the curva for only one match even though Lazio fans has been repeating racism acts for dozen of times. Kick out racism is serious business in Serie A.

  3. How to kick out racism? Hit it where it hurt most, the pocket. Have the match behind closed door. Sure, the club will suffer for the act of the ‘minority’ of their fans, but it would also ensure the club would be doing something to prevent that from occuring in the future.

If the stadium was reopened and the behaviour continues, time to start docking points next.

  4. The closure of Curva Nord for one match only.
    Seriously?
What about heavy fines for Lazio?
Ban the ultras from entering Olimpico for a decade?
Don’t they have cameras to capture the faces? Find out their identities and ban them for the rest of their lives.

  5. @Phil and Ruben, for life? How old are you? That is quite severe wouldn’t you agree? I mean people who vio!ently attacked and rioted wasn’t getting life band, even international hooligans got away with less, but I know what’s the issue: people like @Dino who God save you, equate things to things without substance. Nazi doesn’t equal rasist, not that I wanna defend their actions, however at the same time you can’t be such ludacrious either because you’ll end up on the other side of extremism.

I’ll stop because you can try to argue that I defend the actions done, which I’m not, rather simply analysing your reactions.

  6. Yes @Burky BAN THEM FOR LIFE. What are they doing there? Insulting a human to the point of tears? That’s the sort of role models you want for the younger fans of the club?

Ban them forever! The sport will be better for it.

  7. Should be closed for the rest of the season and increased from there for future instances. Personal fines and suspensions for Fuhrer Lotito himself.
