Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino has officially resigned as Coach of Argentina, so Lazio risk losing Marcelo Bielsa.

The Seleccion lost the Final of the Copa America for the second year running and Leo Messi announced he was retiring from international duty before the age of 30.

This evening Martino released a statement confirming his resignation from the bench “due to the lack of clarity in the designation of the new authorities of the Argentine Federation and the serious issues in the side that will represent the country at the Olympics.”

Many clubs are refusing to release their players for the tournament in Rio de Janeiro next month.

Among the favourites to take over the Argentina job is ‘El Loco’ Bielsa, who already had the role from 1998 to 2004.

He went on to Chile, Athletic Bilbao and Olympique Marseille.

Bielsa has reportedly had a deal with Lazio for weeks, but was meant to fly in this week and postponed the trip.

It’s now rumoured he will arrive in Rome on Thursday, even though Lazio have already begun pre-season training without a Coach.

If the Biancocelesti haven’t finalised the contract, then Bielsa could walk away to take the Argentina job.
