Lautaro Martinez admits Leo Messi won the Ballon d’Or mostly thanks to Argentina’s Copa America victory and says he ‘learned a lot’ from Inter legend Diego Milito.

The Argentinean striker went through his career in an interview with Inter TV.

“Football is my life, I was born in the dressing room, although I also liked basketball,” Lautaro said, as quoted by FcInternews.it.

Lautaro joined Racing academy in 2014 and crossed paths with former Inter striker Diego Milito who played for the club in the last two years of his career, from 2014 until 2016.

“Milito has made history and I can say we are friends,” said Lautaro.

“We often talk and he always helps me when I need. I’ve learned so much from him.”

Lautaro made his senior debut with Racing replacing Milito in the second half of a 3-0 win against Crucero del Norte in November 2015.

“It meant a lot to me. He received a standing ovation when he left the pitch and I was dreaming of experiencing the same one day. I’ve worked hard to achieve my targets.”

Lautaro won the Serie A title with Inter last term but was also part of the Argentina team that conquered Copa America.

The 24-year-old believes that lifting the trophy last summer was crucial for Messi to win the Ballon d’Or.

“Argentina hadn’t won an international trophy for 28 years, it was an incredible emotion,” Lautaro admitted.

“It was our dream and Messi’s dream as well. He’s been playing with the national team for a long time and it was unforgettable to lift the cup at the Maracana.

“It was an important target and we achieved it with a team spirit and with Messi, who is our leader.

“He is the best player in the world, he has won the Ballon d’Or seven times and that says it all. I believe that Copa America was very important for him to win the Ballon d’Or.”
