The Argentine, nicknamed El Coco, will land in London this evening after Roma announced a deal worth €30m plus €5m in performance-related bonuses (£25.75m plus £4.29m).

“I am proud to have played for Roma and hope one day to return,” he told news agency ANSA as he was about to board a flight to London from Fiumicino airport.

He was accompanied by girlfriend Sofia Herrera and is expected at Heathrow at 18.55 UK time.

“Perhaps I wasn’t able to express all I could’ve and wanted to do here. It’s also true that there was something missing for the whole team.

“I hope this season will go better. I saw the lads are hungry to do well and are very concentrated. I wish the club, the Coach and my teammates to go as far as possible.

“As for myself, now I hope to do well with Tottenham in London. I am ready. I want to thank and salute the fans who always behaved well with me. I embrace them all. They will always be in my heart.”

The 21-year-old scored 15 goals in 33 Serie A games last season and provided five assists.

He had joined from River Plate in July 2011 for €17m (£14.9m).
